ExpressVPN vs NordVPN: which one for the World Cup?

Both unblocked everything we threw at them. The differences are price, speed and how much hand holding the apps give you. Here is the head to head.

HEAD TO HEAD EXPRESS VS NORD

These two sit at the top of nearly every VPN ranking, ours included. For World Cup streaming specifically, both passed all four of our platform tests: BBC iPlayer, ITVX, SBS On Demand and CazeTV. So the choice comes down to the secondary stuff, which turns out to matter day to day.

Speed

NordVPN lost an average of 9 percent of baseline speed across our UK and Australian test servers. ExpressVPN lost 12 percent. Both are far beyond what 1080p live streaming needs, so call this a narrow NordVPN win that you will probably never feel.

Unblocking resilience

The better question is what happens when a server gets blocked mid tournament. NordVPN has thousands of UK IPs and rotates them constantly, so a blocked server costs you a 30 second reconnect. ExpressVPN runs fewer servers but refreshes addresses aggressively, and we never found both of our test locations blocked at once. Honest verdict: tie. Both recover fast.

Apps and TV setups

ExpressVPN wins here. Its apps make exactly one decision for you (connect button, smart location) and its MediaStreamer DNS trick puts geo unblocked streams on Apple TV and smart TVs that cannot run VPN apps. NordVPN's apps are perfectly fine, just busier, and its SmartDNS equivalent takes a little more setup.

Price

NordVPN, clearly. Long plans land around 3 to 4 dollars a month against ExpressVPN's 7 to 9. If you only want one month for the tournament, both charge near 13 dollars, and both have 30 day money back guarantees that genuinely pay out, we have tested the refund process on each.

Most people should take NordVPN and pocket the difference. Pick ExpressVPN if you will watch mainly on an Apple TV or a smart TV without native VPN support, that one feature justifies the premium.
